I Am A Queen
Janie B. Dye Memorial Scholarship
The Janie B. Dye Memorial Scholarship is named in honor of the late grandmother of North Carolina A&T State University alumna, Porlan Cunningham.
Ms. Cunningham’s grandmother, Janie Bell Dye, had a tremendous impact on her life while attending North Carolina A&T as a first-generation college student.
She instilled in her a sense of pride and accomplishment, and though her grandmother was not afforded the same educational opportunities while growing up in rural South Carolina, she was a loyal supporter of her granddaughter’s pursuit of higher education. In 2006, Janie passed away several months shy of being able to see her granddaughter become the first person in her immediate family to graduate with a four-year degree.
To honor her grandmother’s go-getting spirit and legacy, and to help young women achieve their educational goals, Cunningham has created an annual scholarship fund, to be administered through I Am A Queen, a non-profit organization that her friend and fellow A&T alumna, Alana V. Allen has confidently led for more than a decade. It is through this scholarship award, that she seeks to be a catalyst to help young women become tomorrow’s leaders and change makers.
