The Unseen Heroes: Grandmothers at I Am A Queen's Annual Back to School Giveaway

Every year, as the first light of dawn breaks over Greensboro, N.C. a heartwarming scene unfolds outside the Windsor Recreation Center on East Gate City Blvd. Grandmothers, the unsung heroes of many families, gather with their grandchildren, arriving as early as 7 a.m. for I Am A Queen's Annual Back to School Giveaway that starts at 10 a.m. These remarkable women, often the backbone of their families, patiently wait in line for three hours to ensure their grandchildren start the school year with the supplies they need.

The sight is both humbling and inspiring. With a mix of determination and love, these grandmothers bring their little ones, standing steadfast in the morning heat. Their faces tell stories of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to their families. For many, this event is a beacon of hope in a community where generational poverty and low-income status are prevalent challenges.

I Am A Queen has been a pillar of support in this community for 16 years, assisting over 700 plus children and their families annually. The event not only provides essential school supplies like new backpacks, paper, crayons, notebooks, and scissors but also embodies a message of care and solidarity.

As the grandmothers wait, they share stories, laughter, and sometimes tears, creating a sense of camaraderie and mutual support. They know that the backpacks their grandchildren receive are more than just bags filled with supplies; they represent opportunity, empowerment, and the promise of a brighter future.

This year's event, scheduled for Saturday, August 3, at 10 a.m., holds special significance. It will be the last time the giveaway can be held at the Windsor Recreation Center due to the center's closure for rebuilding. The anticipation and urgency are palpable, as the community rallies together to make this final event at this beloved location memorable.
